Endodontics - The Key to Preserving Your Natural Teeth

Saving your natural teeth is one of the best ways to maintain your overall oral health. Endodontic treatment focuses on the inside of the tooth, specifically the pulp and surrounding tissues, and plays a crucial role in preventing extractions. At Aurora North Dental, we provide advanced endodontic care designed to relieve pain, treat infections, and help you retain your natural teeth whenever possible.

Endodontics Services We Offer

Apicoectomy

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is one of the most common endodontic treatments. It is used to save teeth affected by deep decay or infection. The process involves removing the damaged pulp, disinfecting the root canals, and sealing them with a durable material. This treatment eliminates pain, prevents further infection, and preserves the natural structure of the tooth. Root canal therapy allows patients to avoid extraction and maintain a complete and functional smile.

Endodontic Retreatment

Sometimes, a previously treated tooth may need a second root canal. Endodontic retreatment involves reopening the tooth, removing the old root canal filling, and cleaning the area thoroughly before resealing it. This procedure is recommended when an earlier treatment did not fully heal or if new problems have developed. Retreatment is an important option for saving the tooth and avoiding extraction when the initial procedure has not been fully successful.

Apicoectomy

When a root canal or retreatment does not fully eliminate infection, an apicoectomy may be required. This surgical procedure involves removing the tip of the tooth's root and surrounding infected tissue. It is a targeted approach that reaches areas traditional treatments cannot. Apicoectomy helps preserve the tooth and eliminate lingering infection, making it an essential option for patients with complex dental issues.

Pulpotomy

Pulpotomy is a conservative treatment used when the pulp has been exposed but is not completely damaged. During this procedure, the dentist removes part of the pulp and places a healing material over the remaining healthy tissue. This helps the pulp heal and reduces the risk of further damage. Pulpotomy is especially useful for young patients and those with minor pulp injuries. It focuses on preserving the vitality and natural function of the tooth.

Apexification

Apexification is designed for young patients whose teeth have not fully developed. When the pulp dies before root development is complete, this procedure encourages the formation of a hard tissue barrier at the root tip. Using a special biocompatible material, apexification helps support the continued growth of the root and stabilizes the tooth for future restoration. It is a key treatment for maintaining long term oral health in children and teens.

Treatment of Dental Trauma

Dental injuries can happen suddenly and may require immediate attention. We treat all types of dental trauma, from cracked teeth to injuries that affect the pulp. Our goal is to save the natural tooth and prevent further damage. With modern tools and techniques, our team provides fast and effective treatment to restore the tooth and protect your overall oral health.

Endodontic Surgery

In some cases, surgical treatment is needed to reach areas that cannot be addressed with non surgical options. Endodontic surgery may involve removing part of the root, repairing damaged root surfaces, or treating hidden canals. These procedures are performed with precision and are often the last option before considering extraction. Surgical endodontics helps preserve teeth that might otherwise be lost.

Procedure Details

Endodontic procedures involve several important steps that ensure successful treatment and long lasting results.

Your appointment begins with a full evaluation, including digital X rays or CBCT scans. These tools help us understand the condition of the tooth and create an accurate treatment plan.

Local anesthesia is used to numb the area, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Our team is trained to minimize any discomfort during treatment.

A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals. This step allows us to clean the inside of the tooth while preserving as much of the natural structure as possible.

We carefully remove the infected or inflamed pulp, using special tools to clean the inside of the tooth and eliminate bacteria, decayed tissue, and debris.

The canals are disinfected and shaped to prepare them for the filling material. This process ensures a tight, secure seal that keeps bacteria out.

Once clean, the canals are filled with a material called gutta percha. This is sealed in place with adhesive to prevent reinfection and protect the tooth.

After the canals are filled, we close the opening with a temporary or permanent filling. In many cases, a crown will be placed later to strengthen the tooth and restore its full function.

You will receive clear instructions for post treatment care. We will explain when you can return to eating normally and how to manage any temporary sensitivity. Our use of modern techniques promotes faster healing and improves overall results.

Aftercare and Recovery

Recovery after an endodontic procedure is typically straightforward. It is normal to feel mild discomfort or sensitivity for a few days. Pain relief medication may be recommended to manage this. To protect the treated tooth, avoid chewing on it until it has been permanently restored with a crown or other final restoration.

Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing gently, and use mouthwash if advised. Stick to soft foods for the first few days and monitor for any signs of swelling or discomfort. If you notice anything unusual, contact our office right away.
